Here are two more closeup pictures of the mysterious statues of San Agustin, Colombia. Video documentary of the statues in Parque Arqueologico coming up soon!
That statue, which is the depiction of a bat and another one that looks like an owl were excavated from my front yard. They were moved to the national park to be put on display.
The small yet remarkable town of San Agustin in Colombia is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Many statues dating back as far as 4,000 to 6,000 years have been found in the surrounding valley, and it is estimated that this accounts for a mere 10% of the ancient ruins which lie buried throughout the area. There have been many arguements about the origins of the statues and the civilization that made them, ranging from the possible idea that these people were related to the Mayans from central america, to the far fetched theory that was proposed by Erik Von Daniken (who else?) that this race was transplanted by aliens from another planet or some such related UFO concoction. One fact is known: this mysterious race vanished before the Spaniards made it to Colombia, and have left behind a legacy which remains a mystery to this day.
